The members of the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors are saying they plan to keep holding money in a special fund to use for maintenance needs of the county jail.

After delays and cost overruns, the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center opened on the northeast side of Sioux City in 2024.

In a memo for the Tuesday afternoon county board meeting, Chairman Dan Bittinger said the public has asked about continuance of the maintenance fund. He said the fund is fully funded and will continue to be funded, “to ensure the LEC facility is in correct working order throughout the lifetime of the building.”

County Finance Director Ryan Ericson told Siouxland Public Media the jail maintenance fund had $1.4 million at the beginning of the year, and now has $1.8 million.

The account earns interest and if it ever reaches $8 million, then payments into the fund will be suspended until it drops below $8 million.

County officials continue to address maintenance needs at the jail.
