In this week's episode of Welcome to What’s The Frequency, as we dig into the long and winding process of building a new jail facility for Woodbury County.

Throughout much of the 2010’s, many Woodbury County Board of Supervisors meetings were taken up with the topic of the repair needs of the downtown Sioux City jail and courtroom building. Eventually, the decision was made to give up pursuing repairs costing millions of dollars and to develop plans for a new jail.

That was followed by a March 2020 public bond issue vote placed before Woodbury County voters only one week before the brunt of the coronavirus pandemic hit Siouxland, and a lot of subsequent public discussion on cost overruns and delays.

Now, the Woodbury County new jail is roughly two months away from opening, and two county officials who are well acquainted with the details of the opening, plus the controversies that have played out, give an update in this episode.

Matthew Ung and Mark Nelson are elected officials on the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors, while Nelson is also one of the three people who are members of the Woodbury County Law Enforcement Center Authority, which has the closest oversight of the project.
