Throughout Northwest Iowa, people are going to special hearings to hear how property tax levy rates may be rising or falling in the next fiscal year.
For a third year, Iowa county boards of supervisors, city councils and public school boards have mailed letters telling people how to attend public hearings on those financial plans.
During its meeting on Monday, the Dickinson Board of Supervisors discussed the proposed property tax levy. That rate is projected to fall from $2.45 per $1,000 of taxable valuation to $2.12 per $1,000. Dickinson County Supervisor Steve Clark said he supports dropping the levy.
Those property tax levies are stated as a maximum possible levy, but moves by the school city and county officials could reduce those levies by the time budgets are finally adopted in april
Also on Monday, that levy hearing was held by the Sioux City School Board. The property tax levy is currently $12.38 and could drop to $12.22.
The Woodbury County hearing will be held on March 31 at the Woodbury County Courthouse
The Woodbury County property tax levy for people living in towns is currently $7.11 per $1,000 of taxable property valuation. For the next fiscal year of 2026-27, that county property tax levy could rise to $7.30..
The proposed Sioux City property tax levy is $15.59 per $1,000, which is a large reduction from $17.12 per $1,000. That Sioux City hearing will be held at 4 p.m. March 30 at City Hall.
Fiscal year 2026-27 spending runs from July 1 through June 2027.
