A substantial change is dawning in the composition of the Sioux City Council, as none of the three councilmen with expiring terms ran again.

On Tuesday Craig Berenstein, Ike Rayford and Rick Bertrand were elected as council successors.

Berenstein got the most votes drew more than 21.7 percent of the votes in the six-candidate field.
Placing second was Bertrand with 16.9 percent and Rayford had 16.86 percent, just six voted behind the 3,868 total of Bertrand.

Those who didn't finish in the top three were Marty Pottebaum, Paul Koskovich and John Den Beste, who ranged from 16.1 to 12.1 percent.

Pottebaum and Berenstein are former council members who were seeking a return to public service, and Bertrand is a developer and former state senator.

Several candidates said they want to promote a better environment for businesses, reduce taxation and steer the city in a more positive direction.

There was a primary election in Sioux City on October 7, which reduced the number of candidates from nine to six for the November ballot. The top three vote-getters in the primary were Berenstein, Bertrand and Rayford, so they finkished in the top three for a second time in four weeks.

The total number of registered voters in Sioux City is 45,845.

The holdover members of the Sioux City Council are Mayor Bob Scott and Councilwoman Julie Schoenherr, whose terms expire at the end of 2027.

The councilmen who did not run again were Matthew O'Kane, Dan Moore and Alex Watters.
