Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott declared March 1st COVID-19 Memorial Day.

“To remember the survivors and victims of the COVID-19 Pandemic and to acknowledge the sacrifices and service of all first responders, medical providers, and others who have stepped up during this global pandemic.”

Council Member Alex Watters questioned if more could have been done to prevent deaths in the community.

“I get so frustrated because I wonder if some of those lives could have been spared if we could have just put the partisan politics aside and understood and listen to science.”

The Iowa Department of Public Health reports 211 have died of COVID-19 complications in Woodbury County.

“Hindsight is 2020, but I am still going to push CDC guidance and make sure follow our ordinance and get vaccinated when eligible,” said Watters.

The head of Siouxland District Health, Kevin Grieme, also provided an update on local vaccination clinics at the Tyson Events Center. There is one planned for tomorrow (Tuesday) and another scheduled for Monday, March 8th.

“We may perceive this as our final large community clinic. Then we’ll look into alternate ways to distribute the vaccine after that.”

Grieme says some locally-owned pharmacies are also distributing the vaccine. He says health officials are also working to provide doses to underserved populations. Plus, they also reached out to all packing plants in the community.

Appointments for the next clinic at the Tyson Events Center open up this afternoon on-line and by phone. Grieme says Siouxland District Health expects to distribute 3,000 doses this week and an estimated 1,500 for the clinic on Monday. The next clinic will be open to a larger group of people, including those 65 and older, in addition to people with disabilities who receive care at home.
