A winter storm dropping several inches of snow and sleet and also bringing in high winds lead to cancellations of classes, activities, and services across Iowa today. Half of the flights from the Des Moines International Airport, where more than 4 inches of snow fell by midday Friday, were canceled or delayed. More cancellations were likely as the National Weather Service issued winter weather and storm advisories for most of the state. The northwestern corner of Iowa, including Sioux City and Storm Lake, is under a blizzard warning through Saturday.
Poor travel conditions because of the snowy weather have resulted in officials deciding to close government department services in Woodbury and Dakota counties in the Sioux City metro.
The Woodbury County Courthouse in Sioux City and Dakota County Courthouse in Dakota City, Nebraska, will close at noon. Additionally, the city offices in North Sioux City also closed at noon.
Two Siouxland campaign events by Democratic presidential candidates Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg have been canceled today, due to the weather.
Buttigieg was slated to speak at 11 a.m. in Le Mars, while Biden was scheduled to hold an event in the early afternoon at a Sioux City college. Campaign officials said both events were cancelled, as was Biden's event in Council Bluffs. Buttigieg spoke to more than 300 people at West Middle School in Sioux City last night.
