They will draw less attention than in the year of a presidential election, but Republicans and Democrats across Iowa will hold party caucuses on Monday, February 2.
Both parties will pick central committee members, local delegates and discuss their platforms.
In Woodbury County, Democrats will meet at 7 p.m. in one location at First Congregational United Church of Christ.
Woodbury County Republicans who live in Sioux City will caucus at three places, with West High School, North Middle School and at Western Iowa Tech Community College, and those who live in rural places will caucus in locations near them.
Suzan Stewart, of Sioux City, is the city co-chair of the Woodbury County Republican Central Committee.
“This is where voters just elect their neighbors to the central committee, and then those people organize a party for the next two years and also delegates to the county convention,” Stewart said.
Attendees will also discuss their top priorities. Stewart says for local Republicans that includes taxes, the 2nd Amendment and anti-abortion rights.
The Woodbury County Democrats will focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and access, according to county party chairman Ryan Akerberg.
“These are the times of gathering facilitating the necessary steps to make sure that we're a strong enough party to where we can make a difference in those ultra important years and frankly, we have midterms coming up this year. I mean this is just as important as any presidential year for sure," Akerberg said.
