Flooding from the torrential rain that's soaked much of southeastern South Dakota closed schools for a second day today submerged city streets and caused some to evacuate their homes. In Brandon, northeast of Sioux Falls, the heavy rain turned the local golf course into a lake. 

The cities of Mitchell, Dell Rapids and Madison have been hit especially hard with the area receiving more than 7 inches of rain over two days.

Airbnb is offering its Open Homes Program to people who are displaced because of recent tornadoes and flooding in South Dakota.

There are still evacuations going in Madison, South Dakota because of flooding. It has received 3 to 5 inches of rain in the latest storm. The South Dakota Highway Patrol says flooding closed a section of Interstate 90 near Mitchell.   And in Sioux Falls, residents and business owners are cleaning up after destructive tornadoes and straight-line winds earlier this week. Crews today were removing fallen trees and debris.

A new report has found Iowa has the seventh-highest obesity rate in the nation.

Sheriff's officials say flooding around Madison has caused some residents to evacuate.

Lake County Sheriff Tim Walburg urged people not to drive through Madison as crews were busy moving some people from the flooded area. It has received 3 to 5 inches of rain in the latest storm. 

The South Dakota Highway Patrol says flooding closed a section of Interstate 90 near Mitchell.

Flooding around Madison South Dakota has caused some residents to evacuate.

The National Weather Service says that at least one tornado hit the city of Sioux Falls overnight and caused massive damage.

The weather service confirmed an EF-2 tornado with winds of about 125 mph hit a portion of the city. They are examining a second area where a hospital complex suffered heavy damage to see if that also was a tornado or simply straight-line winds.

The local fire chief says at least 37 buildings were destroyed or have structural damage mainly on the south and southwestern parts of town.

The weather service confirmed an EF-2 tornado with winds of about 125 mph hit a portion of the city. They were examining a second area where a hospital complex suffered heavy damage to see if that also was a tornado or simply straight-line winds.

One northwest Iowa school bond issue passed and another failed yesterday. A supermajority of 60% was needed for all measures to pass.

The Sgt. Bluff-Luton School district has failed to pass a bond for the 4th year in a row, though this year’s bond was significantly smaller than past measures.

Voters in Sergeant Bluff-Luton  Community School District rejected a $33 million-dollar bond that would’ve covered building a new primary school and moving baseball and softball fields.

Officials say the severe weather that tore apart structures in South Dakota's largest city appears to have spared the rest of the state.

National Weather Service officials are surveying a probable tornado and straight-line winds that hit the southern part of Sioux Falls just before midnight yesterday that caused damage to at least 37 structures. There are some reports of injuries, but no word on any fatalities.

One northwest Iowa school bond issue passed and another failed.

Today, clean-up started for the community of Sioux Falls, South Dakota after a severe storm blew through late last night.  The National Weather Service confirms at least one tornado, an EF-2 with winds of about 125 miles per hour hit a portion of the city.  Brian Allen is main anchor for KSFY-Television in Sioux Falls.  Brian shares what he experienced during the height of the storm and talked about the aftermath with Siouxland Public Media News.

The city of Sioux Falls is reeling after a likely tornado struck late last night, leaving behind a trail of damage and debris.

“There is a level of destruction up here that we’re not use to seeing.” 

That’s news anchor Brian Allen who works for KSFY-Television in Sioux Falls who says the twister touched down about a mile from his home.    

“Roofs have collapsed, windows have been blown out.  There is tree damage area.. power poles are down and trees are down.”

Allen is a former anchor at KCAU Television in Sioux City.
