Iowa Caucus Final Results Should be Released Today; More Coronavirus Kits Coming to Iowa

022720 404

Today, the final results of the Iowa caucuses and resolution to the Iowa delegate math that so far gives Pete Buttigieg a slight lead are expected to be released.

The Iowa Democratic Party began a recount of 23 precinct locations on Tuesday and expected it to last two days. The recount comes after requests from by Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, of Vermont.

Buttigieg holds a 14-12 lead over Sanders in the national delegates from Iowa, a projection based on state delegate equivalents awarded at the caucus precinct sites.

Sanders has claimed victory in Iowa based on total supporters at caucus sites on first and second alignment, a measure he likens to a popular vote victory.

The state medical director says the State Hygienic Lab in Iowa City will be getting test kits for Covid-19, the coronavirus that has spread to more than 30 countries.

Dr. Caitlin Pedati says those kits should arrive in one to two weeks.  She said, currently, only the Centers for Disease Control and a dozen other labs in the country have the capability to test for the virus.

Pedati testified for nearly an hour before a state senate committee, answering questions about the outbreak.

Gov. Kristi Noem said there's a low risk of COVID-19 appearing in South Dakota at this point, but the state is prepared for it.

An internal task force has formed to prepare for it and is talking daily with health care providers to ensure the state has the ability to test for it and care for anyone showing symptoms of it, Noem said during her weekly press conference.
