What's The Frequency: One month into Iowa Legislature session, lawmakers update where things stand in bills on schools, colleges, property taxes & more

Ways To Subscribe

The Iowa Legislature is approaching one month of work.

Some of the topics being debated this year include oversight of what instruction happens in Iowa public colleges and high schools, some property tax tinkering, restricting use by students of mobile devices during school hours, whether to halt new casinos from being built, how to fund K-12 education and colleges, and to possibly lengthen the amount of family leave time that state employees get.

Republicans hold strong majorities in both Iowa chambers, so they are poised to put in place some changes if they can agree.

Just like last year with What’s The Frequency, once per month we will check in with Republican and Democratic legislators to hear how they think things stand as the session plays out until roughly May 2.

Discussing Iowa Legislature topics this week are two Siouxland members of the Iowa House, with Republican Megan Jones of Clay County and Democrat J.D. Scholten of Sioux City.

We also will check in with a show concerning the main issues in the South Dakota and Nebraska legislatures for a future episode.
