With important primary elections coming up, people in Nebraska can now vote early by mail, South Dakota people will vote next, then Iowans can carry out early voting by mid-May.
The Nebraska primary election is on May 12, and the primary is on June 2 in both Iowa and South Dakota.
Nebraskans who are planning to vote by mail are encouraged to send their ballots at least a week before the primary election. Lancaster County Election commissioner Todd Wiltgen said he recommends people send their ballots in the mail by May 5 at the latest.
He said that’s because in recent years, the U.S. Postal Service has lowered its delivery standards in the face of financial pressure, leading to slower delivery times.
Normally South Dakota people would be voting by mail by this point. A Union County election official on Wednesday said a printing glitch has delayed getting the ballots, but hopefully that can take place by April 27.
In Iowa, absentee early ballots will be ready to mail by May 13, and May 18 is the last day that Iowa counties can mail out ballots. Those ballots must be received by county auditors by 8 pm. June 2.
On a case by case basis, some Iowa counties will have early in-person voting. In Woodbury County, such voting will be at one location, the Woodbury County Courthouse, from May 13 through June 1.
Voters will cast ballots on contests for county, state and federal positions.
