There could be a new law in South Dakota that creates an enhanced penalty for animal abuse that comes from torture-level actions.

The bill would increase the maximum penalty for “torture-level" animal cruelty a 10-year prison sentence and $20,000 fine. The current penalty is two years in prison and a $2,000 fine.

Several senators described “vicious” or “wicked” attacks on animals that they said necessitate the higher penalties.

The bill passed out of the state Senate chamber on a 25-8 vote last week.

Also concerning the Legislature, South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden held a town hall meeting in Dakota Dunes on Saturday.

The event was hosted by the Americans For Prosperity group, where Rhoden gave details on his plan towards reducing property taxes.
