The first candidate for one of the three Sioux City School Board seats has announced plans to be on the November ballot.
Bobby Michaelson on Thursday told Siouxland Public Media News that he will seek a second term after first being elected in 2021.
He said there has been “a pretty powerful list” of achievements in the Sioux City School District in the last few years, so he wants to continue to add to that direction.
Michaelson said there are many good ideas coming up from staff and administrators, such as the return of reading classes in middle schools. He said “the cabinet has made tremendous gains,” but more needs to be done in the areas of special education and English Language Learners.
Michaelson said the main role of school board members is to let school administrators carry out their tasks, not to micromanage them. He is a former longtime teacher and coach who works in administration at Bishop Heelan High School.
The board members with expiring terms are Michaelson, board president Jan George, and Dan Greenwell.
Also on Thursday, Greenwell said he is contemplating running again, and took out nomination papers for that. He noted that when he last ran for the school board, he filed one hour before the deadline.
On Wednesday, George said he may decide on whether to pursue a second term roughly next week.
Outside of Sioux City, elsewhere in Iowa contests for school board, city council, and mayor positions have a filing period that runs through September 18.
