EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY/EQUITY/INCLUSION: MMIW Awareness

Siouxland Public Media covers a tri-state region that includes several Native American reservations. One issue impacting indigenous people involves violence against tribal members, especially women. In 2022, the station heightened awareness in the community by focusing on the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. This submission highlights the work of journalists Mary Hartnett and Sheila Brummer. They covered community events, investigations and produced a public affairs show featuring advocates and allies. One special report looked into why no one has been arrested for a 40-year-old cold case involving a member of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska.
