Summer means heading to a ballfield to take in a baseball game. Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer reached out to her old friend from Morningside University, Bob Protexter, who currently serves as head coach for GTRA. That includes the communities of Graettinger, Terril, Ruthven, and Ayrshire.

Protexter played baseball for Morningside before heading to the Soviet Union more than 30 years ago. He has served as a coach and baseball consultant for many years.

Protexter shares his thoughts on the sports, his connection to baseball in Ukraine, and a baseball event he organized for young people in the region.

Information on Sandlot Sundays:

The GTRA Baseball Program will begin hosting Sandlot Sunday Nights for baseball boys and softball girls in grades 2nd through 6th at the Titan Baseball Field in Ruthven, Iowa on June 5th, and will be held every Sunday here in June on the 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th, with times running from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm finishing under the lights!

This is for all young players in the Graettinger-Terril-Ruthven-Ayrshire schools and surrounding neighboring towns and cities.

Simply come out to the park and play baseball games, Whiffle Ball games, Smoosh Ball games, participate in some contests, get some instruction, learn some new baseball things, and have some fun!

Bring your gloves and bats and baseball shoes. If your player does not have gloves or bats we will provide these items. And please remember to bring your good and positive attitudes.

This program is FREE of charge. No preregistration is necessary. This will be like Open Gym for baseball and softball players. All players are welcome. And all participants every Sunday night will get free ice cream at the Lakeland EZ Stop in Ruthven on their way home.
