Mike Pence has been a radio host, an attorney, a lawmaker and a governor. Longtime journalist, public radio host and Franklin College journalism professor John Krull, has watched Pence’s career for years. He says Pence lost twice before being elected to the House of Representatives for 12 years.
“In the year 2000, he stepped in, and by then, the district had been pretty safely gerrymandered so that it was easy for him to win the congressional seat and he stayed there for twelve years . . . till he was elected governor of Indiana.”
Krull says Pence has been successful in appealing to different groups within the Republican party, with his laissez-faire business views to his firm stance on social issues.
“But many of them are libertarian in nature, so the country club Republicans also felt comfortable with him.”
“There was a regular guy quality to him that appealed to Republicans who are there just because they are concerned about the pace of change and all of that.”
Krull says he sees Pence as a fighter who will be involved in politics for a long time, no matter the outcome of the this year’s presidential election. For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
