Check It Out: Me Before You

Today, I’m recommending JojoMoyes, international bestseller, Me Before You.  I have had my eye on this title for some time and finally decided this month was the perfect time to read it, so that the story will be fresh in my mind when the movie comes out next week.

I’m that type of reader that loves to see the film adaptations of the books I’ve read. There is just something about being able to see how the book plays out on the big screen that has always appealed to me. Me Before You is the latest in a streak of bestselling books to receive the Hollywood treatment.

In Me Before You, we meet Louisa Clark, an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been outside their tiny village. But when the café where she works closes, Lou has to find another job, and fast. Despite her lack of experience, she is hired as a caretaker for a recently paralyzed man.

Lou’s charge is Will Traynor, former extreme sports enthusiast, ladies’ man, and global business mogul, who due to a spinal cord injury from an accident has been left a quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair. Finding her new boss to be snarky, moody, and bossy—she immediately wants to quit, but can’t, since her family so desperately needs the money.

Sticking it out, Lou and Will soon find common ground. But when she discovers that Will intends to end his own life, Lou makes it her personal mission to persuade him that life is still worth living.

Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that begs the question, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

Check out Me Before You and works of moving romantic fiction at the Sioux City Public Library.
