This week on The Exchange, we speak with the author of a new book who tells of his first-hand experience in the oil fields in the boom town of Williston, North Dakota.  Michael Patrick  says his book looks at people who are often surviving financially from week to week.

We also talk about one of the country’s first carbon capture and storage projects that is associated with an ethanol plant in Marcus, Iowa.  Bruce Rastetter is the CEO of Summit. He says the partnership is a giant step forward for the biofuels industry.

Community advocate and anti-violence movie producer Cindy Waitt has worked behind the scenes to help with the COVID-19 Pandemic through the Kind World Foundation.

Earlier this month, the Governor of Iowa ended the mask mandate in the state of Iowa. A move Waitt calls psychological abuse. She shares her thoughts with Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer.

The Sioux City council took action surrounding COVID-19 and face coverings.  As Siouxland Public Media’s Sheila Brummer reports, they wish more could be done as local health officials track an increase in cases.

The Sioux City Council strongly recommends citizens wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Last week, a group of concerned citizens presented a petition asking the council to take action with a resolution for a mask mandate.

Council members say their hands are tied with the state when it comes to a mandate.

Coming up on The Exchange, a Woodbury County judge last week invalidated more than 50 thousand prefilled absentee ballot request forms about sixty days out from the November election, after a lawsuit filed by the GOP and President Trump's campaign. The plaintiffs argue that Secretary of State Paul Pate decreed that only unpopulated absent ballot requests could be sent out.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds acknowledged the increase of COVID-19 cases in the state during a news conference today.

The CDC reported last week, Iowa saw the highest rate of new cases in the nation and 5th highest number of positivity rates.

Reynolds says the biggest increase is with younger adults in the college towns of Iowa City, Ames and even Iowa Falls.

The governor didn’t call for further action as recommended by the CDC for impacted areas, including a mask mandate.

A local advocate launched an on-line petition calling for mandatory face coverings and masks for the state of Iowa.  Cindy Waitt, who works with the Kind World Foundation, the Waitt Institute for Violence Prevention and many other charities, talked to Siouxland Public Media about her push for wearing masks.

The petition can be found here.

This week we go back in time to a remarkable decade in rock history as we explore the organic and prolific explosion of California folk-rock artists we still treasure today.

As folk artists gradually moved from Greenwich Village to West Hollywood, singer songwriters such as Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Carole King and Linda Ronstadt emerged from the living rooms of Laurel Canyon to become hit makers of the record industry.
