As another year of Siouxland schooling begins, officials discuss education trends, AI, funding & first day nerves

Tens of thousands of Siouxland students are attending schools in the tri-state area.

Sorry to say, but the summer days are dwindling, and the start of the 2026-27 school year is approaching in Siouxland.

School officials are getting ready with preparation events in all three states.

The South Sioux City School District held open houses in all the school buildings this week, and the first full day of School in South Sioux is Friday, August 14.

At Dakota Valley in South Dakota, which is the second area state to start, the school year opens on August 18.

Classes can begin in Iowa on August 24, and the Sioux City district starts that day.

This show sets the scene for what it takes to pull off not only the beginning of a school year, but to carry that forward for an entire academic year.

Joining me for this show are Sioux City School District Interim Superintendent Jim Vanderloo and Sioux City School Board president Treyla Lee.

Lee and Vanderloo discuss test scores, and the impact of Artificial Intelligence in classrooms, teacher staffing, school funding, the possible building changes for the three public high schools, and even first day nerves as a year begins.

The Sioux City School Board earlier this week approved board priorities for the 2026-27 year, as well as legislative priorities for the year ahead, and Lee recaps those too.
