The start of the 2026-27 school year is approaching in Siouxland, and several preparation events are being held this week.
About 75 new teachers began their careers in the Sioux City School District during new teacher orientation on Tuesday.. The orientation class included new college grads starting their first teaching jobs, plus others who have moved after teaching in other districts.
Classes can begin in Iowa on August 24, and the Sioux City district starts that day. Veteran teachers will first report for the year on August 18.
Sioux City Schools Spokeswoman Leslie Heying said excitement is building for the year, and the new teachers are invested in reaching students. There are more than 14,000 students in the Sioux City School District.
“ We are excited to see the positive impact they will bring to their classrooms through their enthusiasm for education,” Heying said.
Also on Tuesday afternoon, the South Sioux City School District held open houses in all the school buildings. The first day of School in South Sioux is Friday, August 14.
At Dakota Valley in South Dakota, teacher in-service sessions run the last four days of this week, and the school year opens on August 18.
