Last week on The Exchange we focused on Latino candidates and effort to encourage more Latinos to run for office.

In the 2020 U.S. Census, it was found that 6.8 percent of the 3.2 million Iowan residents self-reported as being Latino, and there are about 7,000 elected positions in the state.

Siouxland Public Media's Bret Hayworth talked with two successful candidates about reasons behind a lack of Latino candidates for political office.

Rob Barron became the first Latino to win election to the Des Moines School Board in 2013. In 2015, Barron founded The Latino Political Network.

in January, Maria Ramos will begin her second term on the Storm Lake City Council seat, Ramos finished second of the four Storm Lake City Council candidates, with 27 percent.

We also talk with Davenport Native Brendan O’Brien about his book, Homesick: Why Housing is Unaffordable and How We Can Change It.
