A special Sioux City School Board meeting will be held late Wednesday in order to determine if a consultant will be hired to guide a community committee process looking into building new public high schools.
The board members will hear presentations by facilitator firms who want to be hired for that work.
After those proposals the school board will consider a motion to hire a facilitator for the School Building Advisory Committee, which is about to hold its first meeting this month.
At the most recent Sioux City School Board meeting two weeks ago, four facilitators had said they carry out that work. School Board President Treyla Lee said the committee could use a facilitator to improve and focus deliberations.
The West, North and East high schools were opened in 1972, and are showing their age.
The School Building Advisory Committee has 19 members, and is expected to hold about 10 meetings in a process that will extend into 2027.
The possible cost for hiring a facilitator could range from $10,000 to $70,000, meeting participants said.
The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the downtown district headquarters.
Interim Superintendent Jim Vanderloo in August told Siouxland Public Media News that he expects the committee discussions will be broad.
Vanderloo said, “...Do we remodel, do we rebuild, do we consolidate, what is it? Maybe there are many other options out there that people will think of. We just know that (the schools) need some attention.”
