As people depart for Fourth of July trips, the weekly gas price in Iowa has fallen six consecutive weeks.

The price for self-serve unleaded dropped by one cent this week to $3.53 per gallon in Iowa. Over those six weeks with reductions, the price fell a combined 75 cents from the high price of $4.28 per gallon.

The current price is 57 cents per gallon more when compared to one year ago, and the national un;leaded price is $3.85.

Stations in Siouxland are selling unleaded in the range from $3.10 to $3.35.

Prices are from the American Automobile Association, as reported each Wednesday by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. AAA reports gas prices overall are still the highest they’ve been in four years despite the downward trend.

The prices spiked as the war in Iran resulted in the Strait of Hormuz being greatly blocked from shipping oil from Mideast nations.

AAA, is predicting nearly 217,000 South Dakotans will travel over the holiday.

This weekend people can expect to enjoy warm temperatures and fireworks to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. Meanwhile, officials in Siouxland are urging drivers and boaters to keep safety in mind.

In 2023, a 13-year-old girl was killed in a boating accident on Lake Madison in South Dakota during the July holiday. Following her death, legislation was passed in 2025 to establish stronger criminal penalties for boat operators who are under the influence.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is carrying out Operation Dry Water from July 3-5, with an emphasis on operators who are impaired.

IDNR is also reporting that all of the swimming beaches in the Iowa Great Lakes are listed as satisfactory for swimming.

That includes Crandall’s Beach on the north side of Big Spirit Lake, where swimming previously had not been recommended in much of June due to high levels of E-coli bacteria.
