School districts across Nebraska are beginning a new focus on reading and writing, by implementing tools to improve the skills.

The state’s department of education aims to increase 3rd grade literacy rate by 75% by 2030.

The department plans to do that by implementing a plan focused on professional development, educator preparation programs, literacy coaches, and family literacy.

Jaime Cook, literacy officer for NDE, said more than 3,000 teachers in Nebraska are training in the science of reading.

Cook also mentioned that school districts along with the NDE are updating curricula and connecting more with teachers and families.
