state Democrats say if Iowa is not at the front of the presidential nominating calendar in 2028, the party will relinquish the spotlight to Republicans.
The Democratic Party committee in charge of setting the order of caucuses and primaries heard from 12 states that want to be in the early window, including an Iowa delegation on Wednesday..
State Rep. Ross Wilburn says the Iowa Republican caucuses will be first in the nation in 2028. He says keeping Iowa Democrats later on the calendar sends the wrong message to rural voters in the Midwest.
“We can’t afford to continue to let Republicans have a spotlight and the megaphone in Iowa. If we want to build lasting sustainable majorities, we must engage with voters in Iowa and middle America,” Wilburn said.
Iowa’s plan would allow Democrats to pick a nominee by mail or in-person at local caucuses. The DNC dropped Iowa as an early state in 2024.
