As the 2026 legislative session came to an end the South Dakota legislature discussed two rejected bills and a funding measure for dam repairs on Monday.

There was an attempt to overturn the bills that Governor Larry Rhoden had vetoed.

One of the bills discussed would expand requirements for personal care agencies; it failed on a 36 to 27 vote.

The other proposal prohibits lab-grown meat from being sold in South Dakota; however, a 5-year ban was signed into law. It had a 32-32 vote.

Lawmakers were unable to override any veto as they needed to get a two-thirds vote to advance but could not reach that number.

Additionally, the legislature approved funding for repairs to the Richmond Lake dam and spillway, outside of Aberdeen.

Legislators approved $8.2 million coming from the state’s unclaimed property fund to support the project. Adding the amount to an already $21 million of state funding spent on the project.

It was noted that if the work is not completed, it would put many people’s lives and properties at risk. It passed through the house and senate.
