South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden signed a bill that requires voters to provide proof of their citizenship into law on Thursday.
The bill requires first-time voters in South Dakota to provide proof of citizenship, and it exclusively applies to state elections.
Acceptable documentation people can use for voter registration includes a driver’s license, a tribal identification card, and a photocopy of a passport or birth certificate. For the driver’s license to be valid, it must be issued after July 1st, 2025.
Residents who previously registered or voted in the state do not need to provide verification of their citizenship to update their information.
In a press release, Rhoden said, “The bill ensures only citizens vote in state elections, keeping elections safe and secure.”
Additionally, Rhoden signed five other bills regarding election security into law.
