The filing period for people who want to be appointed to the Sioux City School Board ends late Friday evening.

Last week, the board and school district announced the intent to fill the school board position opening by the appointment process.

People who want to be considered have 11 days to submit a letter of interest to the Board Secretary.

District Spokeswoman Leslie Heying told Siouxland Public Media that the list of the people who applied to be considered can be obtained on Monday, March 30.

If someone in the public wants the position to be filled instead by a special election, they must submit a petition with more than 2,000 signatures by Tuesday, March 31. Heying said no one has submitted a petition for that as of Wednesday.

The Sioux City School Board vacancy was created by the resignation of member Jan George in mid-March.

In a board meeting this week, Treyla Lee was selected as board president, to fill the role that George has held, although the board needs one more member to get back to full strength.
