Four months after being elected to a new four-term, Sioux City School Board member Jan George on Monday announced he was resigning from the board.

During the board meeting in which he spoke with emotion, George announced he has blockages in his heart, and will undergo triple bypass surgery in a few days.

George said his focus will be on his health recovery and his family.

Sioux City School District Spokeswoman Leslie Heying, in a statement, said the district “ is grateful for Jan George's commitment to the District, first as a longtime teacher and most recently as a member and president of the Board of Directors. We appreciate the countless time and energy Jan has dedicated to making our schools the best they can be. The District has achieved multiple accomplishments under Jan's leadership. We thank him for his many contributions over the years and wish him the very best."

George was elected to the Sioux City School Board in 2021 and re-elected in 2025.

His resignation is effective Tuesday. The current board vice president is Treyla Lee, who is in her third year on the board.

The board members have up to 30 days to appoint a new member. Additionally, school district constituents can also petition to fill the opening by special election.
