The Sioux City council will discuss the Homeless Assistance Response Team in its meeting Monday.

The purpose of the discussion during Monday’s meeting is to determine if the city will continue with the program or end its operations.

HART was created to connect homeless people with services and address homelessness-related issues; it consists of city staff, police, and service providers.

Mike Collett, interim city manager, told Siouxland Public Media on Monday that the city will no longer lead and coordinate the program’s daily operations.

However, Collett mentioned other agencies could continue.

According to Collett, the program is led by the city through collaboration efforts with over 20 agencies that usually contribute based on need. Some entities involved include the Rosecrance Jackson Treatment Center, Mobile Crisis Assessment Team, Siouxland Mental Health Crisis Center, and many more.

He said HART does not receive federal or state funding but an allocation of staffing time, and it does not provide agencies with funding.

Collett stated HART staffing will be discussed in Wednesday’s city’s budget review.

The council’s budget review session will be held on Wednesday, March 18th, at 8:30 am.
