A new bill that would require lawmakers to take a civic test has been introduced to the Nebraska Legislature.
Under the bill, legislators will be required to take a 20-question civics test within 90 days of taking office. The questions on the test will be randomly selected and cover U.S. history and civics.
According to the bill, if legislators do not pass the test, they would be invited, but not required, to attend a voluntary civic literacy seminar administered by the Nebraska State Historical Society or the Legislative Research Office.
The bill has cosponsors from different political backgrounds, including state Senators Democrat John Fredrickson, Republican Stan Clouse, and Independent Megan Hunt.
The test score will be posted on the legislature’s website and will not impact legislators’ ability to hold or serve in a public role.
Additionally, a bill requiring students in kindergarten through twelfth grade to learn about the history of communism has also been introduced to the state legislature.
