A Catholic school in South Sioux City that has been open more than 60 years is heading towards a closure by the end of the school year, if not sooner.
St. Michael’s Catholic School officials held an “emergency meeting” on Sunday, where people who could be financial donors or contact alumni were urged to attend.
“Our school needs our community now more than ever,” a social media post said.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church Pastor Matthew Niggemeyer did not return phone calls on Monday or Tuesday.
Back in December, in a letter to school families and parishioners, Nieggemeyer wrote that the school would close at the end of this school year, in a plan approved by the school board members and Archbishop McGovern.
The letter said the past 10 years have shown St. Mary’s School tuition and parish collections have shown a trend towards financial insufficiency. THe letter said many generations of families got a sound education, and officials will work to support families who want to find other avenues for a Catholic school education.
The end of February is the school’s deadline to raise money to prevent a closure before May, KCAU News reported.
