Omaha Tribe to discuss legislative plans

The Omaha Tribe of Nebraska will hold a press conference Thursday at the Nebraska State Capitol to discuss the tribe’s legislative plans.

John Cartier, Attorney General of the Tribe, told Siouxland Public Media Wednesday the tribe plans to introduce two bills.

The first bill introduces a Medicaid waiver that would allow Medicaid to pay for traditional healing services delivered through Indian health facilities and tribal health programs.

Cartier mentioned that other states, including Oregon and Arizona, implemented the waiver that recognizes traditional medical services.

The second bill would change laws regarding agreements between the governor and federally recognized tribes about the collection and sharing of tobacco product taxes on purchases within tribal lands.

Cartier said some of the revenue made by the tobacco tax compact from the reservation goes to the state and part of it should go to the tribe.

He said his office is doing the best they can to partner with a senator who is going to make the bills their priority.

After the interview, Cartier notified Siouxland Public Media that Senator Jane Raybould had introduced the bills to the legislature.
