The Winnebago Comprehensive Healthcare System opened its newly constructed domestic violence shelter this week.

The new shelter replaces the old facility and was designed to provide survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking with a safe and nurturing atmosphere to heal. It includes three living quarters, office space, and a therapy room.

Advocates and survivors provided their feedback to guide the design for the new shelter.

In a press release, Matthew Benson, Director of the WCHS Domestic Violence Program, said, “Our new shelter not only addresses the community’s need for more space but also creates an environment where survivors feel safe and supported.”

The total cost for shelter was estimated at $650,000 to $700,000 and came from multiple sources, including the WCHS and the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime Tribal Set-Aside Funding.
