There will be a big midterm election in November 2026, with some governor, congressional, legislative and county seats determined by voters in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
The first state to open its candidate filing period is Nebraska, which began Monday.
According to the Nebraska Secretary of State’s Office, candidates who are already in office and seeking another term must file by Feb. 17, while nonincumbent candidates have until March 2.
If there is more than one candidate running for a seat from each of the Republican or Democratic parties in Nebraska, a May 12 primary election will reduce the field to the candidates making the November 3 ballot.
Some candidates already announced their intentions for the 2026 election before registration opened. Republican governor Jim Pillen is running for a second term, and Republican agribusinessman Charles Herbster has hinted he will run.
