More than $20 million could be coming to improve runways and other pieces at the Sioux City airport to benefit the Iowa Air National Guard’s 185th Air Refueling Wing.

Earlier this week, the two federal chambers approved a 2026 defense spending authorization bill, which President Trump then signed on Thursday.

Mayor Bob Scott told Siouxland Public Media News that getting federal funding for the Sioux Gateway Airport is crucial to maintaining the 185th unit in modern standing with infrastructure.

Iowa 4th District Congressman Randy Feenstra said the funding bill includes authorizing a runway repair and replacement, an Aircraft Parking Apron, and more at Sioux Gateway Airport.

That move authorizes the money, but it will not be set with certainty unless the funding is fully appropriated in upcoming weeks by Congress.

Feenstra in a release noted the Iowa Air National Guard 185th Air Refueling Wing has more than 1,000 jobs.

NOTE: AN earlier version of this story had an incorreect dollar amount on the fuding authorization.
