The Republican Party will continue to hold the Iowa House District 7 seat, following a special election win Tuesday in some Northwest Iowa counties,

Wendy Larson got 70 percent of the vote to easily beat Democrat Rachel Burns.

Both women candidates live in Odebolt in Sac County, and Larson is a stay-at-home mom with a background in corporate sales. She wants to preserve personal liberties, and protect property rights, and improve mental healthcare in rural Iowa.

The district has more registered Republicans than Democrats. In an August special election in an Iowa Senate district that had more Republicans, Democrat Catelin Drey of Sioux City won the seat.

“You know, we've lost special elections to Democrats, so I think they just really came out strong and said ‘no, we are going to stand up for conservative values and we're going to show up and speak,’ and they did, and they came out big,” Larson said.

Voters were deciding who would succeed Republican Representative Mike Sexton in the Iowa House, since the Trump administration appointed Sexton as Director for USDA Rural Development in Iowa.

Iowa House District 7 includes Sac, Calhoun, Pocahontas, and part of Webster County.
