The Sioux City Council on Monday voted to defer a $60,000 contribution to the Siouxland Initiative for a second time this month.

There was a lot of discussion between the council members on what the city gains for allocating funds to that economic development organization.

Mayor pro-tem Dan Moore said he had sought an explanation on how the organization helps the city. Moore read a letter from Kevin McManamy of the Siouxland Initiative, which cited support for Cone Park, Chris Larsen Park Riverfront Development, and the Seaboard Triumph Foods Expo Center.

Council member Julie Schoenherr abstained from vote, saying she does not have a positive impression of The Siouxland Initiative.

Council member Alex Watters questioned if giving the organization was the best way to utilize taxpayer funds. Mayor Bob Scott said The Siouxland Initiative is leading the charge on a key project at the 185th Air National Guard Refueling Wing project.
