Federal shutdown may result in no SNAP food program benefits to Siouxland states in November

An Iowa agency is alerting Iowans who use a government program that November benefits may not be issued onto cards if the federal government shutdown is not resolved.

The Iowa Health and Human Services Department made that announcement Friday about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or Snap. A federal agency has told individual states not to issue bNovember benefits.

Iowa SNAP currently serves about 131,000 households per month and allocates $45 million dollars, which are federally paid.

Iowa HHS has engaged food banks and other community-based organizations to prepare to provide additional support to impacted Iowans.

People who receive SNAP benefits should kerep their cards as the state looks for federal updates on whether benefits can be directed to people.
