Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts is no longer being held at the Woodbury County jail, according to the jail’s online records.

The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office stated on its Facebook page Thursday that Roberts was taken into custody by the U.S. Department of Justice on a federal arrest warrant.

A native of Guyana, Roberts was brought to the jail on Friday after being detained by federal immigration officials.

Federal court documents unsealed Thursday reveal a judge refused to reopen Roberts’ immigration case after a deportation order, and he has not had work authorization since December 2020, as first reported by Iowa Public Radio.

Roberts was hired by the Des Moines school district in 2023.
