If Congress fails to pass an appropriations bill before the start of the next fiscal year, the federal government will shut down.
South Dakota Representative Dusty Johnson is introducing a bill called the Eliminate Shutdowns Act to prevent that outcome.
The bill would automatically trigger a 14-day continuing resolution in the event of a lapse in appropriations.
If Congress fails to pass a budget or a continuing resolution on time, the automatic 14-day continuing resolution will extend repeatedly until a new deal is reached.
The bill provides continued funding for entitlements and other mandatory programs. These programs will be funded at the rate required to maintain their current service levels.
The automatic continuing resolution ends if Congress passes an appropriations bill or continuing resolution.
If the Eliminate Shutdowns Act is passed, it would go into effect on September 30th.
