Election 2023 Sample Ballot-Sioux City School Board-2023 Election

Voters across Iowa will elect candidates for mayor, city councils and local school boards tomorrow. School bond elections must be held on the same day as city-school or general election in November, because of a new property tax reduction law

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In Sioux City, voters will elect a mayor and one open City Council seat, as well as five of the seven seats on the Sioux City school board.

Last week all Iowa candidates were required to report their campaign contributions and spending to the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board’s Web Reporting System. https://ethics.iowa.gov

The system shows that school board candidate Dan Greenwell out-spent each of the 11 candidates running for the Sioux City School Board, but Treyla Lee has outdone Greenwell in fundraising.

Lee's campaign raised $5,085 dollars, with contributions ranging from $20 to $1,000 dollars, as of Thursday. Greenwell has self-funded $11,000 dollars to his campaign and had the most total expenditures at more than $11 thousand dollars.

Greenwells’s opponent in the race for a two-year stint on the school board is Semehar Ghebrekidan. She reported receiving $1,785 dollars in donations including a $5 dollar self donation. She also received an endorsement and $150 dollar donation from the Western Iowa Labor Federation and a variety of private citizen donations ranging from $10 to $300 dollars.

Ghebrekidan's $1,514.33 dollars in expenses went towards campaign signs, advertising, thank you postcards, postage, campaign merchandise and a PO Box.

All school board members are required to submit an accounting of their campaign finances, including donations, loans and expenditures, five days before the election. However, campaigns raising less than $1,000 do not have to submit disclosure forms.
