The Sioux City Council Monday night deferred a ruling on concept plan for a residential subdivision near North Middle School. The hearing and the ruling will be deferred until the next meeting set for September 7th.

Rod Lieber wants to construct a 133-lot residential subdivision on a 49-acre site at 2319 and 2605 ½ 41st St. Lieber Heights would feature 92 single-family lots and 41 duplex or townhouse lots.

At yesterday’s public hearing on the new development during the council meeting, Sharon Brown was one of several local residents spoke out about the development’s effect on traffic was her concern. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss tells Radio Iowa that the board’s decision could have a tremendous impact on the Midwestern ethanol industry.

The federal government is calling for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions from the ethanol plants. He says if they industry does not enforce reductions — that’s going to be a problem for ethanol. Iowa is the number-one ethanol producer in America.

The lawyer for a company planning to install wind turbines in northwest Iowa says Dickinson County Supervisors do not have the authority to pass a moratorium that would block the project.

Kristy Rogers, an attorney for Invenergy, told Radio Iowa that the company is following the rules outlined in the county’s current ordinance and is close to seeking a construction permit from Dickinson County supervisors.

She says what the action is a violation of Iowa law because passing a moratorium is an act in bad faith if taken to stop a particular project.

Jamie Hunter is with a group asking for the moratorium. Hunter says other Iowa counties have taken that step. Woodbury County has changed setbacks for wind turbines after much debate.

Critics of Invenergy’s project say without a moratorium, the company is likely to be granted a construction permit while that review of the ordinance is underway.
