The governing body for Iowa’s three state universities is imposing new travel restrictions due to coronavirus.

The Iowa Board of Regents is immediately canceling all university-sponsored international travel for all faculty, staff, and students at Iowa, Iowa State, and UNI for 30 days, including Spring Break.

The board says faculty, staff, and students who are already out of the country, are being recalled if they’re in China, Iran, Italy or South Korea.

U.S. Rep. Steve King is seeking to rename the post office in Sioux City for the late Brig. Gen. George "Bud" Day, his office reported in an email Thursday.

King frequently invokes Day's legacy in his public statements -- he even named his annual fundraiser the Gen. Bud Day Pheasant Hunt. Day died in July 2013 at age 88.

A bill that enhances criminal penalties for companion animal neglect and abuse has passed the Iowa Senate.

The bill strengthens the definition of animal neglect. And while some animal rights groups wanted first-offense animal torture to be a felony, the Senate bill kept it at an aggravated misdemeanor and added a sentencing minimum.

Iowa’s animal cruelty laws are considered some of the weakest in the country, and The Animal Rescue League of Iowa says this bill will go a long way toward improving that.
