Mary J. Treglia House Honored with War Eagle Award

The Sioux City Council deferred a vote on a consulting services agreement related to the redevelopment of the Badgerow Building for the second time yesterday.

There was no discussion among council members before the 4 to 0 vote to further delay the matter. Mayor Pro Tem Dan Moore abstained from voting, citing a conflict of interest.

The council is now scheduled to vote on the resolution regarding the consulting services agreement with Chicago-based Hunden Strategic Partners (HSP) on Dec. 16.

The council first voted unanimously to delay a vote on the resolution on Dec. 2, citing a lack of information about HSP's experience with projects that involve historic tax credits.

One Siouxland organization and one person were honored today with the 2019 War Eagle Human Rights Award. The Mary J. Treglia Community House and Andrew Pearson were recognized this morning at the Sioux City Public Museum, in honor of International Human Rights Day.

Award winner Andrew Pearson is a juvenile court officer who has devoted his career to improve the Siouxland community through his work at East Middle School.  Pearson was adopted and didn’t have a lot of support when he was young. But he says one person at the Boys Club changed his life forever.

“I went to the Boys Club and that was kind of like a home away from home and there was a man there that took out time with me.  And if he hadn’t been in my life, I don’t know where I would be. SO, I just want to be that person for some of the other kids that are out there.”

The other awardee, The Mary J. Treglia Community House opened 78 years ago.  It is known for its work with newly arrived immigrants.  The organization works to empower, educate and support the community through multiple services. advocacy programs and the celebration of diversity.
