Iowa Court Takes Up Challenge to Voter ID Law, 4:32

062419 432

A trial has begun in Polk County challenging Iowa’s voter ID law.

lawyers for a Latino civil rights group and a college student say the law unconstitutionally infringes upon Iowans exercising their right to vote.

Attorney Bruce Spiva (spy-vuh) says these provisions put burdens on the right to vote that outweigh any potential benefits.

0624spiva1: 16  “The unjustified hurdles that HF516 placed in front of the ballot box will disproportionately trip those voters who are young, voters who are elderly, poor, lacking in educational attainment, minorities, women, and Democrats.”

A lawyer for the state says these regulations are tailored to protect the integrity of Iowa’s elections and instill public confidence in the process.

The University of Iowa has received 115 million dollars-- its largest-ever research award ever -- to study the interactions between the magnetic fields of the sun and the Earth.

The project is part of NASA’s Explorers Program. It will be led by University of Iowa physicist Craig Kletzing (Clet-ZING). Kletzing says his team will partner with institutions around the country to build and launch two satellites to study openings in the Earth’s magnetic fields called cusps.

Kletzing says the entire project will take around five years to complete, including about three years to build the satellites.
