The Exchange, July 11th, 2018, Ona Judge, School Board Candidates, Rivercade

Coming up next on The Exchange, we hear from the three candidates to fill the remainders of a retiring member’s seat on the Sioux City School Board. They will present their proposals to the school board at its meeting next Monday.  One of them is former school board member John Meyers.

Also, we talk with the author of a new book that tells the story of an enslaved woman who ran away from President George Washington and was never caught.

And a look at the events you can expect at this year’s Rivercade Celebration.  That’s coming up, after this news.

Welcome to The Exchange, on Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.

Three people have applied to fill a vacant seat on the Sioux City School Board.  That’s because board member Mike Krysal resigned on June 18h, saying he was "physically and mentally worn out" after a series of budget challenges and controversies, according to the Sioux City Journal.  On June 28 the school board published an official notice and started a two-week process for people to petition instead of holding a special election. If that doesn’t happen, the school board will select the new board member at the July 16thboard meeting.

The candidates are former school board member John Meyers,  Miyuki Nelson, and Monique Scarlett.  Meyers is a former school board member who has also worked for the city of Sioux City.

Monique Scarlett is a Wealth Management Client Representative at US Bank who also serves on the Sioux City Human Rights Commission.

Miyuki Nelson says she believes she would be a good board member because she ran for one of the three board positions in 2017, and who volunteers on the District Advisory Committee.  Nelson also says she’s been working at her son’s school since he has been in kindergarten.

Last week we celebrated Independence Day and the role that General and later president of the United States played in the founding of our country. But Washington was not a proponent of liberty for his slaves. In fact, he spent several years attempting to deny liberty to one of them.

Never Caught: The Washington’s Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge by EricaArmstrong Dunbar tells the story of Washington’s efforts to recapture Ona Judge.

Working on another book projects in the archives in Phil to get a feeling for everyday life in Pennsylvania when Philadelphia was the capital of the nation.  She came across an odd runaway slave advertisement in an old newspaper.  And what struck her was that it came from the President of the United States.

This week, the annual Rivercade celebration continues downtown and along the riverfront, featuring a parade, sports, entertainment and a Smile Contest.  I talked with Rivercade spokesmen Garie Lewis and Phil Claeys about what will be going on at this year’s festival.
