Today, I’m recommending a captivating story of love-gone-wrong titled Lies You Wanted to Hear by James Whitfield Thomson. With this first novel, Thomson proves that he is an author-to-watch with this page-turning, beautifully written story, of how over the years, the smallest crack in a relationship, can slowly become a canyon too wide to cross.
When Lucy meets Matt on a blind date, Matt is instantly hooked; he sees Lucy as the fun, sexy, and wickedly smart girl of his dreams. Although she’s still getting over, Griffin, an old lover, Lucy is won over by Matt’s sweet, thoughtful nature.
After 20 years, a marriage, and two kids, Lucy finds herself alone in an empty house; trying to imagine the lives of her two children. Though they’ve been gone for seven years, she is tormented by the heartbreaking role she played in losing them. You can hardly see the sexy, edgy woman she used to be. Back then, she was a magnet for men like Matt, who loved her beyond reason, and Griffin, who wouldn't let go, and always left her wanting more. Lucy comes to realize that the little lies you tell can create more damage than the truth you’re hiding.
Lies You Wanted to Hear explores both sides of a relationship, where each person has their own share of the blame. With this engaging story of two people, who settled in a relationship too soon, overlooking each other’s flaws, the reader will find themselves siding with both characters. But, it's not what happened to Lucy and Matt that makes this novel hard to put down, but WHY it happened.
With shattering, unthinkable turns that will wrench every mother's heart, Lies You Wanted to Hear probes the issue of how well you know the person you married. How much can you trust them with your heart, and with your future?
