Eleanor Roosevelt: First Lady of the World
Eleanor Roosevelt: First Lady of the World
Dr. Scott Culpepper will present “Eleanor Roosevelt: First Lady of the World” at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 30, 2023, at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. Admission is free with a reception to follow.
Eleanor Roosevelt served an unprecedented four terms as First Lady of the United States from 1933-1945. She proved instrumental to her husband’s political success, working alongside him through the bout with polio that almost ended his political career, the Great Depression, and World War II. Roosevelt stepped on an even wider stage after her husband’s death when President Harry Truman appointed her as an ambassador to the newly formed United Nations. She traveled around the world promoting humanitarian projects and worked to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, prompting Truman to call her, “the First Lady of the World.” This presentation will explore how Eleanor Roosevelt overcame private pain and public opposition to redefine the role of First Lady and advance the cause of human rights at home and abroad.
Culpepper holds a Ph.D. in Religion and Church/State Studies from Baylor University; a Master of Arts in History from Northwestern State University of Louisiana; a Master of Divinity with an emphasis in historical and theological studies from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Religious Education from Louisiana College.
