Sioux City panel will air rights of citizens when interacting with immigration authorities

Sioux City Human Rights Commission and Inclusive Sioux City Advisory Committee are sponsoring a presentation on the rights of citizens and non-citizens when interacting with immigration authorities.

As President Trump’s administration prioritizes deportations, many Siouxlanders have approached Heidi Oligmueller, an immigration attorney based in South Sioux City: “We have seen an increase in consultation requests through my office for people that want to know what they should do if they are encountered by police or immigration”.

Oligmueller said that it’s important for people to understand that there are different categories of non-citizens. Depending on the category, different rights or processes are available.

Specifically, undocumented immigrants are often under the impression that they are not protected by our laws. Oligmueller says this is a misconception.

Oligmueller says that everyone has similar Constitutional rights, whether citizens or not, including the rights to remain silent and to speak to an attorney.
